Don't Buy Books

I was going through this article in the editorial of The Times of India about buying and not reading books. Somewhere, I got to read the result of a survey about such voracious book-readers. It said that about 25-30% of those who buy book and leave them behind without even completely them. The authenticity of this survey is something that I myself am not sure of.
For all such book-readers here is an interesting line:-

"Books are not made for furniture, but there is nothing else that so beautifully furnishes a house."

FROM NARAYANHITI TO NAGARJUNA

It’s the advent of a new dawn in Nepal. The “Kingdom of Nepal” is now the “Republic of Nepal”. Gone is the hierarchy and with it the name of one more of the kingdoms of the world, though it took a long time to occur. It’s the modern era of 21st century and is hard to believe that even in this industrial era we had (still have some) kingdoms prevailing over the earth.

It’s a welcome sign for the people of Nepal that they are part of a democracy now. It’s a hard earned fruit that they have got for themselves after so much of the struggle. The end of a 239 years old hierarchy is not a joke in anyway. It took so much of the pain and so much of the red fluid out of the people of Nepal which got them this democracy. I admit that I don’t know much about the history of the nation but whatever I know about kingdom and democracy, it really is a welcome sign for people of Nepal to get for themselves a head of the nation elected by them only.

For so long the struggle for the democracy was on among the people of Nepal that took a fierce face in the realm Raja Gyanendra after the massacre of the family of his elder brother Raja Birendra in 2001 who happened to be the king that time. He had a good name and fame amongst his subjects. He was a foreseeing ruler and gave way for democracy to come up in Nepal in his rule itself. He had laid the foundation of a democracy with the start of panchayati raj in Nepal. But, in early 90s he had to withdraw this rule and again the monarchy came above all. He was assassinated by his own son Deependra along with other members of the family. The reason behind the assassination was given that Deependra was not allowed to marry the girl of his choice (the girl was speculated to be one of the family of the ruler Scindias of India). Deependra also shot himself dead the same night leaving behind the throne for the raja’s younger brother Gyanendra. Some authorities also see Gyanendra play some role in the infamous assassination though the actual truth may be anything. Gyanendra took over the throne and since then Nepal was burning in the struggle for democracy led by the brutal Maoists.

In between so many times the parliament was constituted and again reconstituted. Finally, this year the parliament was constituted once more and the path for democracy to arrive in the nation was laid. A bill was passed by the interim government which snatched all the power of the king and left him just as another citizen of the country. The king was given the ultimatum to leave the Narayanhiti palace occupied by their kin for so long. Finally, yesterday the king left his palace forever and is given the Nagarjuna palace to spend rest of his life. The Narayanhiti palace is proposed to be developed as a museum related to the king and the kingdom of Nepal. It must be a day of great grief for the king and his family and they must have left their palace with wet eyes.

Anyway, every evil has an end. The Nepal govt. should be taking it as a new beginning- a renaissance- the rebirth of Nepal. A lot of things have been done to reach till here and even more things are to be done. Democracy is hard to earn, even harder is to maintain it. Nepal has to get back to peace which has gone far away. The people of Nepal have to respect the ethics of democracy. Its hard to changeover overnightly from kingdom to democracy. It’s the mindset of the people that has to be changed and for that it takes much time. The government and the people both have to get together and move forwards. They have a bright future waiting ahead and they may make it even brighter with their hardwork, intelligence, peace and harmony. GOOD LUCK to the newest member of the democracies of the world!!!

The so-called "MEDIA"

In view of what's all has been happening in the Patna Medical College these days and what's all has been presented in the news, I want to bring forward the point that whether the so-called media is doing its role perfectly or not.
First of all, the point is what exactly the role of the media is? I don't think that its a matter of debate. It is as clear as it can be. Everybody, doubtlessly, is going to agree that the first and foremost role of the media is to bring forward the truth and nothing else. Now, what exactly the media is doing? Even if I agree on the point that what it is doing is just WHAT it should do, is it doing its job HOW it should do? Are the methods adopted by the media right and legal? Whether or not anybody should be there to have a look at what exactly the media is doing or more importantly, HOW is it doing? Should the media be allowed to enter into anybody's bedroom and spoil his or her privacy completely? Should they be allowed to present news that are fake or prepared by planning or conspiring? Should they be allowed to be so biased?
All this has been happening these days. Everytime, a sting operation comes all these questions are asked and then they are forgotten with the operation itself. Now, we medicos (junior doctors) at the Patna Medical College are facing the recent row of these sting operations these days. We are being presented as the beasts in every newspaper. One of the headlines in a leading hindi daily here read, "सो जा बेटे नही तो जूनियर डॉक्टर जायेंगे।" Another daily makes us one of the most wanted dons of patna.
The recent rows of events that are seen from the perspective of the media(which the general public is bound to see) are something like this............................

On Monday, 2nd june, a lawyer's 5-6 year old daughter dies and the parents allege the attending doctors of negligence. The concerned doctors thrash the parents on this allegation.

On wednesday, 4th june, a senior doctor throws away a child when she was crying while he was in his visits for the follow-up of patients in the ward. An F.I.R. is lodged against the doctor.

On thursday, 5th june, some junior doctors attacked a photographer while he was trying to take snaps of the emergency room where these doctors were involved in a fix with a patient and the attendents. The photographer was so beastly thrashed that he is severely injured and is admitted in a private nursing home. After he was beaten the local public acted against the doctors and the doctors in return, with the help of arms and the so-called their gundagardi threw away everybody out of the campus.
This is what the media has presented the whole of the situation like without even trying to look at all the events from our perspective. Is it really correct for media to present things being so biased?
Now, try to look at these from our perspective.
2nd june, the girl who died had come back from AIIMS, New Delhi, where the doctors declared that she was among her last breaths and could die anytime. Her parents took her back to Patna where she again fell ill and was admitted in PMCH where she died after a few hours. Now anybody can understand what was there that doctors could do that they didn't do and were alleged of the negligence.

4th june, the baby was thrown by senior doctor. At the time of a doctor's round for the follow-up of patients in the ward only one attendant is allowed to be there near the patient. All of them are supposed to keep silence in the ward. The meeting time for relatives are fixed. Above all these rules, the baby was crying there in the lap of her mother who was there with her two brothers and other members of their family. In order to get them out of the ward, the doctor pushed them outside wherein the baby fell down on the floor and the doctor was alleged of throwing away the baby and beating the attendants.

5th june, the photographer who was beaten by the junior doctors, first, conspired against the doctors by agitating the patients and the attendants somehow. The doctors were involved in an ugly situation with these agitating person and then the photographer started taking snaps. With the few recent events that had already caused much anger among the doctors against the mediaperson, the photographer fell prey on the hands of the doctors. The beating of the photographer within 20 minutes of time, brought a mob over 200 person who attacked the junior doctors who were on their duty in the emergency. The doctors were face-to-face with YAMRAJ. Somehow, hundreds of the junior doctors gathered and got their colleagues saved and pushed the mob outside the campus. The mob then involved the local public and attacked on the doctors. Someone from the mob threw a stone on the mosque situated just opposite to the gate of PMCH where this all was happening. Soon the fight of the mediaperson took a communal colour and the PMCH gate became a battlefield. Many person were injured among them three were the medicos who sustained major injuries including head injuries who are still admitted in the hospital.

This is all about the events that occurred the last week as seen from our perspective. I, personally, was not a part of any of these events. All of this, that I have written is what I have heard of from other person who were directly or indirectly involved in these events. As any hearsay is, I won't say that this is the complete truth. There must be some element of exaggeration and concealment in this but I can assure anybody that this is something that is the nearest to the truth. Looking at the work of media these days, there is no denying the fact that media exaggerates everything to an extent where it can achieve maximum profit from this. This is an era of marketing and for that anybody can do anything. The real situation of "KALIYUG". I am not saying that the doctors are always right but what I want to say is that what media is doing to gain its marketing profits is of any good for the public or the nation. The public will eat what it is given to eat. It will see what it is given to see. It will hear what it is given to hear. Is it right to keep the public in such a situation where they are supposed to make their opinions on somebody based on such biased presentation of the events? Do we have no right to express our feelings, our emotions?
The media is doing all this by taking the "Right to Informtion" and "Transparency" as their weapon. What does this right to information mean. Does it mean that everybody has the right to know what the prime minister is doing in his personal life. Does it mean that somebody will be asked by the media that how many times does he f*** his wife? What does "transparency" mean? Does it mean that one should build all the walls of his bedroom using the Saint-Gobain glasses to have maximum transparency. Yeah, I know, this Right to information and transparency are not there for somebody's personal life but the media is taking the help of these weapons even to enter somebody's personal life.
The media never shows what we do at the hospital for the public but if anything goes wrong it gets above us and treats us as if we are doing nothing. The PMCH is looking after more than 60% of the total burden of the whole state. We are caring a number of patients that is more than thrice our capacity. Hundreds are there who come as patients but are discharged as healthy person everyday and if one patient dies we are alleged of negligence. If fighting for our security is a part of negligence, then yes, we are negligent. We have no personal grievances wih any of the mediapersons but we wabt only one thing. Let us serve the public, Let us nurse the public, Let us do our job peacefully.......................................................................................

20-20 Cricket and the Indian Premier League

For over one & a half month, the whole of India was feeling the heat of the first ever Indian Premier League. It ended fantastically yesterday with doubtedly the best team winning the trophy. It was an innovative concept of the Zee group that brought up the Indian Cricket League the last year as a domestic 20-20 cricket tournament which included the foreign players also. The BCCI didn’t approve the tournament and started its own with the help of boards of the other cricketing nations and named it the Indian Premier League. The concept of such a tournament was as innovative as the concept of 20-20 game, the newest and shortest approved version of cricket. (Though in India, and maybe in other parts of world also, we, so called, gully cricketers, had invented and successfully executed even shorter and more interesting versions long back.)

No doubt, in a nation like India where cricket is adored as a religion, it had to be a hit straightaway. But, with the presence of so many of the players from the international arena, so much of the glamour involved and, most importantly, so much of the money involved, it crossed every limit and turned out to be a wonderful blockbuster so much so that even a Shahrukh Khan-Karan Johar joint venture would have failed to bring down public to it in the evening and the night show. Undoubtedly, from 8 in the evening to almost midnight, every television in this cricket crazy nation aired only the IPL and nothing else.

It has already become a matter of speculation that “has the IPL done any good to cricket”. The same question arose when Mr. Carry Paker came up with the idea of the commercialization of cricket with the then new version of the game i.e. the one-day cricket. The ODIs were supposed to engulf the test cricket into their ever stretching mouth as Sursa did to Hanuman. Though this didn’t happen and test cricket still managed to hold its ground in many ways but nevertheless lost much of its popularity to the ODIs. The newest adaptation of the cricket is the demand of the era wherein everybody is running and nobody has much time to spend uselessly on things like sports. Cricket had to be shortened from 5 days to 1 day and now from 1 day to a few hours. The 20-20 cricket is answer to this need. Its new, its short, its fast, its interesting, its glamourous, and above all, its crowd puller. I think that everybody who feels that this form is not going to help the cricket should look at the point that what ultimately it has given cricket back. It has given back the crowd which the game of cricket was losing everywhere except for the cricket crazy Indian sub-continent. The crowd has again started to come to the stadium to watch matches. Each and every match of the IPL, irrespective of the teams playing, went houseful.

Should we really condemn the 20-20 cricket when it has given cricket what it required so desperately? Moreover, it has given a great platform for the new talents to come up and rub their shoulders with those of the great players who are their ideals, on whom they have based their cricket. For these new talents it was a great platform to show off themselves and knock the doors of the dressing room of their respective national teams. Adding to this, it didn’t only provide the platform to the youth but also provided all the players plenty of the much needed wealth. Not only this, most importantly, it provided us, the public, with cricket which was the most exciting, most nail-biting, most interesting and most adorable. Looking forward to the next year carnival of the cricket.

SUCCESS

This is a quote that I got to read while going through an article about how to minimize your clinical mistakes. It says everything about success. Although everything that is in the quote is something that everyone knows but the way in which it all has been written looks fantastic to me and a lot inspirational also. Trying to get much inspiration and much encouragement from this.

"Success is not a destination, it's a journey. The only way to succeed is to be brave enough to risk failure, and to experience it too. If you're going to achieve, it is never going to be one smooth unmarred road. Never. Persistence is the toughness of spirit....Success is measured by the effect that you have on the people with whom you interact."

यही सच है

This is one of the many things that I was busy with the last week. "यही सच है", a story written by Mr. Mannu Bhandari---------- I got to read this story on wednesday. This is one of my bhaiya's favourite stories and it was he, who sent me the online link to the full story to read.

No doubt, the story is quite realistic in all its senses portraying the middle-class character of Deepa who is baffled with her past and present, both playing a demanding game with her heart. Her heart and soul are completely bewildered whether to go with her past or to continue with her present. She is engaged with a man called Sanjay and they plan to marry sooner or later. She has left behind her past far back wherein she was in love with another man Nisheet. Something happened to them and Nisheet had left her and they had broken up. She is quite happy with his present in Sanjay and needs nothing more in life. To get a job she goes to calcutta where she finds Nisheet again. He helps her to get the job. Deepa had thought she had left behind her past in Nisheet well back but she turns to be wrong in that. She still had a lot of feelings about him and again her heart slips for him. At last, after so much of confusion she opts to go with the present leaving behind the past.

The whole story has been written as Deepa in the first person. Readers come to feel about everything that she feels and sees everything from her prospective. This is the largest drawback of the story as I feel. The reader comes to know nothing about Nisheet, why he had left her and why he didn't comeback to her when he got the chance. Nothing is told about this or even no clue about these things have been given in the story. Scrutinizing the character of Deepa, one feels that she is still an immature girl (at least for her age). She does not understand herself quite well and keeps playing with two other lives. At the start, though, a clue has been given that her relationship with Sanjay is not a deep feeling of her heart rather a compensation to what she had got in life by loving Nisheet. She was confused even then still she was planning to marry Sanjay and said that she hates Nisheet whereas she had always loved him and never could forget him.

Looking at Sanjay's character, he looks as a pathetic man to me. His lady love is not completely his own. He doesn't know but the girl whom he is going to marry loves somebody else more than him and is using him for forgetting her past. A real pathetic character who has nothing much to do in the story.

As far as Nisheet's character is concerned, I really feel sad about him. Watching with his perspective, he comes out to be a loser (but the real loser for me is Sanjay who even after getting Deepa does not get her completely). His character in the story is not complete----one does not know about his compulsion as to why he left Deepa. It is showed in the story that he loved Deepa even when they had met after so long in calcutta. Yet, he does not reply to Deepa's letter that she writes to him in the last accepting that she still loved her. Maybe, he was not able to forgive himself for what he had done to Deepa though he knows that Deepa had well forgiven him for that. We don't know about what really happened so we can't make any opinion on that but whatever it may be, with Deepa still loving him, it wasn't above love at least.

At last, a real sad story that ends with everybody as the loser. Deepa does not get her love of life but has to compromise it with Sanjay's. Sanjay does not get the love that he deserves in reply to his immense love to Deepa. Finally he gets someone who still loves somebody else. And the somebody else----------Nisheet is empty-handed at the last of the story. Neither he gets his love nor he even could clarify himself.

Kashmir Ki Kali

I got to watch three of the bollywood movies this week. All three of them completely of different genres and era. The first one was Shakti Samanta's "KASHMIR KI KALI" (1964), then Mahesh Bhatt's "ZAKHM" (1998) and the most recent being the new release Mukesh Bhatt's "Jannat" (2008). All three movies are good when watched from their perspective but comparison between them will be a complete injustice as all of them are completely different kind of movies. Still, if forced to rank them according to my choice I would go with Zakhm as the best followed by Kashmir Ki Kali and Jannat in that order. This blog is concerned with Kashmir Ki kali. blogs on Zakhm and Jannat will follow this in a few days hopefully.

Shakti Samanta's Kashmir ki kali is a suspense-cum-love story wherein the audience has no clue about the suspense coming till quite late in the movie. Its a movie about a young guy, son of a rich mother (रानी माँ)who does not want to marry to a girl of his mother's choice. He flees away to kashmir to get away from all this. There he finds a girl who works as a flower-seller and gets a crush on her. He loses his heart to her and she also starts loving her. At the last, the hero comes to know that rani maa is not his real mother and also that she had given birth to a baby girl who was stolen. The hero starts searching for the girl and ultimately, his search ends at the flower-seller whom he loved.

The young guy is played by ever-refreshing Mr. Shammi kapoor and the girl is played by Sharmila Tagore. She made an emphatic debut in Hindi film industry with this film prior to which she had already made the Bengali film industry her own. She looked beautiful and refreshing in the movie and undoubtedly became the heartthrob of a million Indians.

The direction of Shakti Samanta is above all his standards. The beautiful picturisation of the valley of Kashmir makes the movie all the more refreshing. It is one of the many things that can be found common in betwen all the samanta's films. I don't remember names of much of his films but I do remember An evening in paris, Aaradhna and other Rajesh khanna movies of that time wherein similar beautiful picturisation made the movie lively. One more thing that i noticed as similarity in between this movie and Aaradhna is the way the hero and heroine are introduced to each other. Here Sharmila Tagore throws a full bucket of water unknowingly on shammi kapoor much alike in aaradhna wherein she again does the same but with Rajesh khanna.

The best part of the movie for me is its music. Nothing to say about Mr. O. P. Nayyar, one of the best music directors the Hindi film industry has ever had. Be it the words of praise for Tagore's beauty in "Taarif Karoon Kya Uski" or the evergreen love song "Deewana Hua Baadal" or the touching "Hai duniya usi ki", every song touches your heart and you can't resist yourself from humming some words from them. The most beautiful part is the solo Saxophone in Hai duniya usi ki that I have loved from the time I first ever heard it on vividh bharti.

All in all a good movie at last that completely entertains you with all the masalas of the hindi movies-------Love triangle(third angle being Pran), suspense, rich-poor descrimination and many more....................................

Here is a poem that I read first when I was in STD 8th. It was a part of our Hindi coursebook. At that time, I didn’t know much about Rashtrakavi Ramdhari Singh Dinkar or about his way of writing his poems popularly known as ‘वीर रस’। Even as today, I don’t know much about this ras but know something about Dinkar. A nationalist poem, known for his inspiring patriotic poems of the pre-independence era and a firm supporter of revolutionary activists in the Indian freedom struggle, turned into a gandhian later on, though he describes himself as ‘bad gandhian’ as he continued to have soft corner for the revolutionaries and their ideologies.

The kind of anger and arrogance that is exuded in his poems is a clear reflection of his revolutionary thoughts. The way he has narrated the whole story of Danveer Karna in his epic Rashmirathi, is simply superb. The anger of Karna for his mother and his love and respect for the same lady goes side-by-side in the poem. Such a great reflection of a friend’s loyalty is a special treat for every reader.

‘Kurukshetra’, another of his great creations, looks a bit contrary to his revolutionary thought, still he manages to keep his arrogance and anger intact there also. It’s a poem again on the context of the real epic of Hindu mythology “Mahabharat” as is Rashmirathi. (Seems that Mahabharat had a real impact on Mr. Dinkar.) Anyway, Kurukshetra is a poem that condemns war in all its senses, quite contradictory to the notion that revolutionaries love to fight for their right. Presently, I am going through it and will try to write about it in detail when it is over.

After going through part of Kurukshetra and also the poem here “SHAKTI aur KSHAMA”, it comes to the mind that Dinkar, in some way or other, does not feel that Duryodhana was a villain in Mahabharat, as is thought of or as is reflected by Ved Vyas in Mahabharat. For him Duryodhana does not seem to be a bad man. Everywhere, be it Rashmirathi or Kurukshetra or this poem, he refers to Duryodhana as Suyodhana--------- the difference of ‘dur’ and ‘su’ so superbly utilized to changeover the whole picture of the character. I don’t know whether it was Dinkar’s own creation or else is it we, who, wrongly have known Suyodhana as Duryodhana over the time. Can’t say much on this as everything I know about Mahabharat is courtesy Mr. B. R. Chopra who brought the epic in every house of the country with his tele-serial. Even he referred to Duryodhana as Duryodhana only.

Coming to the poem, Dinkar, here again has written the poem with Mahabharat as the backdrop. Somewhere, I had heard somebody telling me that it is an extract from the great Rashmirathi itself. I have not yet read that poem so can’t say much on that again. Does not it looks ironical that coming from a place just 1 k.m. away from Dinkar’s residence, I have not yet gone through his most famous and most acclaimed poem of all times?

Anyway, the poem is about the importance of power that, according to Dinkar, is the prerequisite not only for winning an enemy but also for forgiving him. The act of forgiveness, kindness, tolerance and sacrifice, everything is worth only when you have the power to crush your enemy or else it’s a sign of cowardliness. Dinkar has used the example of snake to put forth this point of his and has used the words so beautifully that I have not forgotten this stanza since I first read it:

kshama shobhati us bhujang ko

jiske paas garal ho,

usko kya jo dantheen,

visharahit,vinit,saral ho.

The use of Lord Rama in the poem is also a beautiful part to illustrate the importance of power as to what it can do when it is displayed to the enemy. This part of the poem illustrates how an enemy thinks of you as a coward until you display your power to him and how he comes down to his feet when you show your power to him.

All in all, this is one of the few poems from my coursebook that I still remember after even so much time has gone by. I loved it the first time I read it and since then I have always-always loved it. Here is a great lesson from the poem to bring down in your life. “First be capable of crushing your enemy down and then think of forgiving him.”

OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM- the lost glory

ANTHEM- A song of devotion or loyalty.
The dictionary says that the national anthem is a song of devotion or loyalty- Devotion and loyalty towards your nation- the nation where you live in, the nation that you live for.

The national anthem is something that does not only signify your loyalty towards the nation but incorporates in itself the whole nationality of a nation. The complete ideologies or even the existence of the nation is determined by its national anthem. Respecting the national anthem is respecting the nation. BUT, DO WE REALLY RESPECT OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM?

A few years back the question of disrespect to the national anthem was once put in front of the govt. the govt as it should have done, took some initiatives towards it. Are these initiatives paying off, can only be known after some time evolves with these initiatives. In the meantime, the private firms like owners of multiplexes also took a step towards giving back its glory to the national anthem. They started playing the national anthem before every film. I don't know whether this step is paying off or not but I know one fact that in someways or other it is even acting in the opposite direction aggravating the disrespect to the national anthem.

On a weekend after a whole week of tiredness, hectic schedules and all the tensions of work, a man goes to a theatre to watch a movie. Not only to watch the movie but to enjoy the weekend, to forget all his griefs of the last week and to refresh and prepare himself for the same grievances the next week. He goes to the ticket counter, stands in the queue for quite sometime, struggles and finally books a ticket for himself. He gets the ticket in his hand and his face lights up as if he has got the ticket to the heaven. He enters the hall, sits on the well cushioned seats with his share of popcorn and cold-drink. Trailers of some films and advertisements start coming. As he starts enjoying his time in the hall, just before the start of the movie a message comes on the screen "please stand up in respect to the national anthem". Suddenly what comes out from the mouth of the man is "not again". His whole jovial mood is spoiled in a fraction of a second with the sight of the message. It happens everytime he comes to enjoy the movie.

The whole hall stands up with nobody wanting to. Is it the kind of respect that we are supposed to give to our national anthem or to our nation? Is it the motto of this step taken by the theatre owners? May be all the person sitting in the hall are to be blamed for their reaction to the anthem but its a normal behaviour of any person if is mood is spoilt like that. If a man has come to watch a patriotic movie, then the national anthem is not going to spoil his mood rather it will add to the patriotic feeling of the man. But if he has come to enjoy a hot movie, the national anthem is always going to spoil the mood of a majority of the public. The playing of the national anthem in such cases is not going to increase, in any sort, the respect of the public towards it. In my opinion, it is something a bigger disrespect to the anthem to incorporate the feeling of sadness of a large chunk of public towards it than just not showing respect to it. Its better to not to respect at all the national anthem than to disrespect it.

I dont know who is to be blamed for this but the ultimate sufferer is our national anthem and our nation as a whole. So lets put up a point here to try and give back its glory to the national anthem that it commands in all the aspects. lets all come together and stand and cheer for the national anthem.

JAI HIND
